Motivational Quote Of The Day

Traditions are the guideposts driven deep in our subconscious minds. The most powerful ones are those we can't even describe, aren't even aware of.

Ellen GoodmanAmerican journalist (1941 - )

Word Of The Day

tumid

(adjective) [TOO-mid, TYOO-mid]

1. swollen or enlarged: "Stuffing my tumid, damp feet into heels after a long hot shower proved challenging."

2. bulging

3. ostentatiously lofty in style; bombastic; 'tumid political prose'

noun form: tumidity
adverb form: tumidly

Origin

Approximately 1541; from Latin, 'tumidus,' from 'tumere': to swell.

In Action

"Max is a slippery character. His rude (and repeated) descriptions of his daughter's 'big melony behind' gave me pause, as did a startling flashback wherein he describes one of his childhood playmates, Myles, by comparing him to a dog:

'For my part, although I am ashamed to say it, or at least I should be ashamed, what Myles put me most in mind of was a dog I once had, an irrepressibly enthusiastic terrier of which I was greatly fond but which, on occasion, when there was no one about, I would cruelly beat, poor Pongo, for the hot tumid pleasure I derived from its yelps of pain and supplicatory squirmings.'"

Mary Rechner. "For the pleasure of a verbal workout, head for 'The Sea'," [Book Review: 'The Sea' by John Banville] The Oregonian (November 20, 2005).

"Given the tumid emotionalism of Ms. Metzner's style, it's not surprising that she has made some of her most memorable images for advertisements for fashion companies like Fendi and Victoria's Secret. But she applies her sensibility to other subjects as well. The Danziger Gallery is showing black-and-white prints of glistening, bulbous lighting fixtures from the 1950's, as well as a still life of metal blocks that brings to mind similar photographs by Irving Penn. Also included are images of the Empire State Building at night, and of a bank of thunderclouds in the Southwest."

"Corrective Exercise Is Functional" - Part 1

As the evolution of the fitness industry continues, perhaps one of the greatest benefits to emerge is the “discussions” it has generated. With all of the gains in research that have expanded our understanding of human anatomy and physiology, there are still vast differences in the interpretation and application of the available information. And this is understandable, since that is the nature of research meeting practical application.

Perhaps no other topic has created more “discussion” than that of function and functional training. And with the overwhelming varieties in human bodies and what they are used for, is it any wonder?

Corrective exercises are of growing interest in the fitness industry, and they are part of this discussion on function. This three part article will attempt to provide a clear understanding of what corrective exercises are and demonstrate the vital role they play in the functional continuum.

Psychological Influences

Any change in life brings both positive and negative consequences. Even something such as winning $8 million on the lottery will bring some negatives (e.g., people befriending you for the money, publicity, etc). However, regardless of the negative aspects, not many people would turn down this if given the choice.

Word Of The Day

Inebriated- (adjective) [in-EE-bree-ay'-tid]

1. stupefied or excited by or as if by alcohol: "On an empty stomach, Jayme was helplessly inebriated by her second drink."

In Action

"Many of the arrests are for what Cpl. Wes Hite calls 'acts of stupidity,' such as vandalism, urinating in public and flouting the borough's ban on open containers.

One such incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, when police caught an inebriated 18-year-old IUP student trying to drag an orange traffic barrel to his apartment at South Seventh and Washington streets."

Mike Bucsko. "IUP gets tougher on drinks, drugs in wake of deaths," Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (December 4, 2005).

"Q: Was it difficult to keep track of Pete's different levels of inebriation over the course of shooting?

A: It was like having a drunk-o-graph. But it is so funny because there are subtle variations (to drunkenness) -- what's the difference between inebriated and pie-eyed? The way I saw it, he starts out, he goes from plastered to pie-eyed to inebriated.

He gets kicked in the crotch -- there was probably some adrenaline dump there -- and sobers up a little bit there. He also throws up, so the blood-alcohol level goes down and then he sleeps."

Susan King. "His only crime? Stealing the show: Character actor Oliver Platt's first-rate performances are second to none." [Movie Review: 'The Ice Harvest'] Los Angeles Times (November 30, 2005).

"A sophistical rhetorician, inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity, and gifted with an egotistical imagination that can at all times command an interminable and inconsistent series of arguments to malign an opponent and to glorify himself."

Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881). British statesman, author. [Referring to Prime Minister Gladstone. On another occasion, Disraeli said of Gladstone, 'He has not a single redeeming defect.'] Speech (July 27, 1878).

"There is something terribly wrong with a culture inebriated by noise and gregariousness."

George Steiner (b. 1929). French-born U.S. critic, novelist. Daily Telegraph (May 23, 1989).

Workout Tip

Part 2 picks up where Part 1 left off, as Natalie addresses strength and power development using bands and the practical application of using heavy resistance bands for outdoor training sessions.

Strength and Power Development

Strength is defined as the ability to apply force and/or overcome large or heavy resistances to movement. Maximum strength is best developed by lifting heavy resistances for lower repetitions. When lifting heavy weights in traditional strength exercises (i.e., squat, deadlifts, bench presses, chin ups, etc), the movement speed can be quite slow, which is not ideal for power development with more experienced athletes (however, it may still work to enhance power in less experienced athletes though). But heavy weights and low reps in the basic exercises are best for maximal strength.

Nutrition Tip

At a meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine held in March in San Diego, researchers distinguished “long-term weight loss maintainers” from the “treatment-seeking obese.” Those who shed the most pounds had these five traits in common:

* self-monitoring

* high-intensity physical activity

* lowered fat intake

* scant amount of time spent watching television

* fewer meals eaten in restaurants

Word of the Day

Today's Word: somnolence

This week's theme: So sleepy.

somnolence

(noun) [SOM-nah-lahns]

1. a sleepy state; sleepiness: "Without electricity, somnolence creeps up on our cabin early every evening."

Origin

Approximately 1386; from Latin, 'somnolentia': sleepiness, from 'somnolentus,' from 'somnus': sleep.

In Action

"Freud's art is as provocative as ever. But the provocation is directed neither at public norms nor prevailing taste. Rather, one is invited to find only the most private uses for it. Consider a painting such as Sleeping By the Lion Carpet, 1996, which shows the vastly proportioned Sue Tilley asleep in a chair. Her sheer bulk -- the way the cascading bonelessness of her flesh causes only tenuously related parts to nestle intimately against each other -- may occasion a shock, the frisson of some kind of breach in decorum. But what is masterful about the finished picture is that Freud takes this experience and deepens it, gouging out emotions and corporeal sensations that extend and very often contradict the original ones. 'Initially, being aware of all kinds of spectacular things to do with her size, like amazing craters and things one's never seen before, my eye was naturally drawn to the sores and chafes made by weight and heat,' he said.

But through the same kind of curious, uninsistent honesty, extended over hours and days and months of attention, he translated Tilley's remarkable physical presence into a painting of tenderness and intimacy. One notices, in particular, the sweet, pointed lolling of her right leg and toe; the intricate balance of cheek and nose resting on propped arm and open palm; and the stalking of her deep-set somnolence by the alert pair of lions behind. This painting is unlike anything before it in the history of art."

Sebastian Smee. "A brush with death," [Now in his 80s, Lucian Freud is working with more urgency than ever. Sebastian Smee recalls conversations about composition, his favourite chair and painting the Queen.] The [UK] Guardian (November 12, 2005).

"The morning, which is the most memorable season of the day, is the awakening hour. Then there is least somnolence in us; and for an hour, at least, some part of us awakes which slumbers all the rest of the day and night."

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). U.S. philosopher, author, naturalist. Walden (1854).

Daily Workout Tip -

Incorporate Using Heavy Resistance Bands - Part 1

The force you have to exert to lift a barbell or dumbbell (or any implement or object) is typically equivalent to the mass of that object. But this force or kinetic profile can be altered by some specific strategies. Attaching heavy resistance bands to the barbell or dumbbell to provide extra elastic resistance is one such strategy. By attaching latex band resistance on the ends of the barbell (or dumbbell, but I will use the word barbell throughout for brevity), we can increase resistance throughout the range of motion of the repetition. For example, the athlete pushes upward in the bench press or squat and stretches the large rubber bands attached to each end of the barbell. As the barbell proceeds further into the range of movement, the more the bands stretch and so the greater the elastic resistance that is applied to the barbell. This allows the athlete to explode upwards and continue to apply high force much later into the movement. This is called accommodating resistance as the increasing resistance closely resembles or accommodates the human strength curve (e.g., we are stronger at lock out in the squat, bench press or deadlift than we are at the bottom of the lift).

Daily Nutrition Tip-

Finding the Best Omega Fat

Since the 1970s when scientists discovered that fish-adoring native populations such as the Inuit largely sidestep heart disease despite eating small amounts of fruit and veggies, the research papers proving that omega-3 fatty acids keep your body a well-oiled machine have been piling up faster than snowflakes during an Arctic blizzard. This popularity has prompted a whole industry devoted to pumping everything from eggs to tortillas to mayo with the stuff, all in the name of value-added comestibles. But there is one big caveat: not all omega-3s are as effective at fending off chronic disease.
